What happens to lost luggage that cannot be located or that goes unclaimed?

Airlines have 90 days to find and reunite lost luggage with the owner. If the luggage cannot be located, a lost baggage claim is paid out to the passenger. Any luggage that remains unclaimed after the 90-day period will be forwarded to the airline headquarters or donated to charity.
